About are family
In
the late 1700's, after the American Revolution, two brothers and their
families moved to Cabell (Montgomery) County, Virginia from Charles
County, Maryland via Amhearst County, Virginia. Leven Covington
Swann a blacksmith and Thomas Reason (Rezin) Swann a farmer and Baptist
Minister moved the area known as "Ousley Gap" near what is now the Mason
and Cabell county line. They were accompanied by their parents "B
& I Swann" who many family historians believe to be Benjamin and
Isabelle Swann from the Eagleton Plantation in Charles County, MD.
Although Leven and Thomas Swann started two branches of the Swann Family
in Cabell County, VA as it was known then, their ancestors had been in
America for over 100 years. In fact, William Swann of Jamestown,
Virginia was a successful early settler in the "new world." His
son's Thomas and Edwin Swann went on to become very successful planters.
In fact, in very recent history, one of the most successful plantations
in the new world, the Swann Plantation, was sold for development.
On this plantation you will find the grave of Thomas Swann one of the
first of many successful Swann's. The Swann's served in the first
representative government in the new world, the House of Burgesses,
Governor of Maryland, the U.S. House of Representative and continue
their public service to this day.
The purpose of this website is to preserve the history of our family for many generations to come as well as provide a virtual meeting place for Swann family members from around world.
